why all dmu computers switch on at 8.30 am every morning?

an interesting conversation happened on twitter on tuesday around the issue of computers automatically switching on at 8.30 every morning in the labs @de montfort university, even if it`s summer time and almost all the students are away.

@SustainableDMU Out of interest, why do DMU computers automatically switch on at 08:30? Should be switched on when someone wants to use them

@SustainableDMU I noticed it when I was at Technology in Gateway House, but have also noticed it at Business & Law in Hugh Aston.

@SustainableDMU Just seemed a bit strange for me to be sitting there in an empty computer lab and have all the computers switch on!

@SustainableDMU Sorry, forgot, I think it’s all computers in public areas. I.e., postgraduate suite in Hugh Aston.

@ParenRaval Ah ok, currently in discussions regarding PC switch off software to help with this. But completely agree with you

@ParenRaval @sustainabledmu Probably has something to do with image/Windows updates, and demand for them being ready well before lectures.

@hippychick_66 @ParenRaval An interesting tension between the student experience and carbon reduction?

@hippychick_66 @sustainabledmu Would it not be possible to have updates done at the end of the day and then shut them down?

@ParenRaval @sustainabledmu You would need to liaise with our Desktop & Mobile Services and On-Site Support teams.

@hippychick_66 @sustainabledmu Either that or have them switch on but go on standby so they’re ‘ready to go’ rather than have them fully on?
